Many Australians would be familiar with the parts of two recovered Japanese midget submarines displayed outside our Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Fewer would be aware that the conning tower of one of the midget subs, M22 is on display at the RAN Heritage Museum at Garden Island.
Prompted by a new website set up by the New South Wales Department of planning , a bit of buzz happening on Twitter and on the Mosman Library blog - I thought you may like to see a clear photograph of the conning tower. The dents you see in the side of the vessel are due to intense pressure caused when the patrol boats SEA MIST, YARROMA and STEADY HOUR depth charged the sub between 0500 hours and 0700 hours on 01 June, 1942.
My friend Mackenzie Gregory gives a brief account of the attack by three Japanese midget submarines in Sydney Harbour - and the remarkable thing is Mac was there, on the night, on the deck of HMAS Canberra.
